I've been thinking about studying abroad for a year, figuring out where I want to go for six months, and preparing for Prague for the last four months. Finally, I'm ready to go. But before that, here is my first blog entry. I've never really written a blog or a journal of any kind before, so I guess I'll just write what I'm thinking, and maybe by the end I'll develop a style of some sort. Who knows.
Looking back, I'm still not entirely sure why I picked Prague. At first, the debate was between if I wanted to go abroad at all or not. Now I am sure I made the right choice, before I've even left. Then, the debate was about which part of the world to go to, mainly between Europe and Israel. After I decided Europe, I wanted to pick somewhere that didn't have English as their main language (but still spoke English), that was relatively centrally located, that had some classes that could be useful, and that was not necessarily "ordinary." Prague fit all of these qualifications, except that it is now becoming a hot spot for travel abroad students, which I didn't know before. It has the added benefits of being less expensive than a lot of other European cities (alright dad, "relatively" inexpensive).
What am I most looking forward to? Hard to say, but Prague has so much to offer and anyone who has ever gone cannot say enough good things about it. For starters, the city is old, and was relatively unaffected the the bombs of WWII. It's a big city, but not too big to make it hard to get to know. The food is supposed to be good, and the beer great (and cheaper than water or soda). The Jewish Quarter is supposed to be amazing, which I am definitely looking forward to seeing. The old castles and bridges will be spectacular.
Hopefully I'll get to travel all over, see my friends who are abroad, and stop being a tourist so I can see the things off the beaten bath. Stay tuned for my first blog post from Prague (via Erie to Detroit to Amsterdam first) and send me any comments or e-mails!
